The Sleepwise programme is founded on the idea that sleep is natural. I believe better sleep comes not by trying to combat insomnia and other sleep problems, but by removing what is getting in the way of quality sleep.
The Sleepwise programme addresses mental, emotional, physiological and philosophical issues. I make use of aspects of behavioural psychology, biofeedback, cognitive therapy, storytelling, transpersonal therapies, mindfulness traditions and neuroscience. You will learn to create better conditions for sleep, inside your mind and body and in the outside world.
Sleep problems and insomnia are very common, affecting up to a third of us. They include difficulty getting to sleep onset, staying asleep, waking too early and not feeling rested after sleep. Some sleep issues such as sleep apnoea, narcolepsy, restless legs and sleepwalking involve more serious disruptions in the nervous system .
Sleep difficulties can be a result of a transient disruption such as jet lag, a stressful/emotional situation like a looming deadline, a relationship break up, home or job change. Most of the time once these situations resolve, either on their own or with help, sleep stabilises. However for some, less than optimal sleep is a chronic or intermittent problem.
During sleep, our brain performs vital functions such as growing new neural networks and organising our memory so it is vital to address problems with sleep if we want to be physically and mentally healthy. Poor sleep is linked to many health problems including obesity, type 2 diabetes, increased heart problems, depression, anxiety and compromised thinking abilities.
The Sleepwise programme takes four weeks. It consists of 4 hour-long face-to-face therapy sessions which can be done in my office or online and two webinar style lectures. There are versions of Sleepwise for children, adolescents and adults. The programme can also be run for small groups. People with other complicating factors sometimes benefit from some sessions of neurofeedback and/or counselling in addition to the basic programme or in some cases a medical referral.
